Library Book Return Reminder

Dear DYM Families,

As we head into the final stretch of the school year, we are asking for your help with returning library books.

At this time, more than 775 library books are still checked out across our school community, with approximately 430 of those belonging to our students. This represents nearly $8,000 in unreturned materials based on average replacement costs.

Because school library budgets are limited, we rely on timely returns so we can continue providing a strong collection of books for all students.

If your child has any library books at home, please take a moment to look for them and send them back to school as soon as possible. Books can be placed directly in your child’s backpack and returned to the library.

If you believe a book was already returned, please have your child stop by the library so we can double check our records.

Families are receiving automated overdue notices each weekend, so this message is simply an additional reminder as we work to get everything back in before the year ends.

Thank you for your support.

Breathing Easy: A Powerful Health Lesson

Grade 6 Health students recently learned about the breathing difficulties that can result from vaping and smoking. To better understand the impact on the lungs, students participated in a hands-on simulation by breathing through straws to experience what it can feel like to live with symptoms of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

This engaging activity helped students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges individuals with lung disease face every day and reinforced the importance of making healthy choices for lifelong wellness. 💨🫁

French Fridays: Learning Through Stations

As the semester winds down, Grade 6 French students have been engaging in interactive station activities each Friday. Last week, students rotated through a variety of French-language challenges, including solving French logic puzzles, illustrating the story Antoine le timide, and creating their own stories in French based on a series of images.

These fun and creative activities provided students with opportunities to practice their language skills while collaborating, problem-solving, and expressing their creativity in French. Bravo à tous! 👏

Farewell, Shelldon! 🐢

A very special goodbye was shared in Ms. Wood's class on Thursday as Shelldon the turtle was released at Sandy Neck Beach as part of the Headstarting Program.

When Shelldon first arrived in the classroom, he weighed just 11 grams. Thanks to months of care, observation, and learning, he grew to an impressive 198 grams before beginning his journey back into the wild. At release, Shelldon was about the size of a 4-year-old turtle!

This incredible experience gave students a firsthand look at conservation efforts and the important role people can play in helping protect wildlife. We wish Shelldon the best as he begins his next adventure in the ocean! 🌊

French Fun at Lunch!

Learning French doesn't stop when class ends! Students have been enjoying a new card game during lunch that puts their French vocabulary skills to the test.

Players compare cards featuring days, months, and dates in French, and the card with the "highest" value wins the round. If there's a tie, it's la guerre (war)! This fun and engaging game gives students another opportunity to practice French while spending time with friends.
Bravo to our students for making language learning part of their lunch break! 🇫🇷✨

6th Grade Band & Orchestra Shine on Stage

Congratulations to our talented 6th Grade Band and Orchestra students on a wonderful concert performance! Throughout the year, these student musicians have demonstrated tremendous hard work, dedication, and growth, all of which were beautifully showcased on stage.

We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and the confidence, teamwork, and musicianship they displayed during the performance.

A special thank you to Mr. Graf and Mrs. Cutler for their guidance, encouragement, and commitment to helping our students develop their musical talents throughout the year.

Bravo to all on a fantastic performance!

A Message of Inspiration, Reflection, and Resilience

On June 11, students had the opportunity to hear from youth motivational speaker Anthony Valentine. Anthony is on a mission to empower, inspire, and foster self-awareness and reflection in 50,000 middle and high school students this school year. Through engaging storytelling, personal experiences, and interactive presentations, he encouraged students to recognize the power of their choices, embrace their unique stories, and understand the positive impact they can have on others.

Anthony's message focused on resilience, personal growth, and the importance of building strong connections within their school and community. His authentic approach and relatable experiences resonated with students, inspiring them to reflect on their own goals, values, and potential for success.

Supporting Student Well-Being at DY Middle School

DYM is working to bring a school-based counseling program to our school in partnership with Child & Family Services (CFS). Once we have enough interested students and required paperwork is completed, we will be able to offer this support during the school day. CFS provides counseling services for students experiencing emotional, behavioral, or mental health concerns. Services are delivered by licensed therapists, billed through medical insurance, and include collaboration with school staff. If you are interested in this opportunity for your child, please review the information attached about the CFS Outreach Counseling Program and complete the steps for your child to be involved.
