Upcoming MAP Testing for DYMS Students 📝

Hello DYMS families, the second of three MAP testing sessions will take place this week:

  • ELA: Tuesday, December 9
  • Math: Thursday, December 11

Testing will occur in advisory from 8:10–11:00 a.m., with extra time for students who need it. MAP Growth helps teachers understand what students know, track progress, and tailor instruction.

Please ensure students are well rested, have a balanced breakfast (school breakfast is free), and bring a fully charged iPad. Contact us with any questions.

Pies With Purpose

Students in Ms. Wood’s advisory teamed up to bake a variety of pies to support local families ahead of Thanksgiving. They peeled, mixed, rolled, and packed each pie with care. Scapicchio’s Bakery generously provided the pie boxes, adding an extra layer of support to the effort.

Shape Strength Test 🟢

Students explored how different shapes—circle, triangle , and square —support weight. We connected this to how our long bones handle forces 2–3 times our body weight, and incorporated mean , median , and mode to analyze our results.

Cup Tower Champions

Students teamed up to build this colorful cup tower, stacking it higher than anyone expected. It was a fun mix of creativity, teamwork, and steady hands—and a great reminder of what they can do when they work together.

Mystery of the Frozen Mummy

This week, 6th grade Social Studies students dove into a grade-wide archaeology project, investigating the real-life case of the ancient "frozen mummy," one of the oldest preserved bodies ever found. Working in groups, students analyzed artifacts to develop creative and evidence-based theories about the Iceman's daily life and the unusual circumstances of his death. The project concluded with group presentations and student voting on their favorite theories.

Notes from Nurse

A signpost reads 'Cold & Flu Season' against a snowy winter backdrop.
As we enter flu and cold season, it’s especially important to monitor your child’s health before sending them to school. Regular attendance matters, but students who are sick need time to rest and recover—and to prevent spreading illness to others.

Please keep your child home if they have:
  • Fever of 100.4°F or higher (return after 24 hours fever-free without medication)
  • Vomiting or diarrhea (return after 24 hours symptom-free)
  • Strep throat (return 24 hours after starting antibiotics and once fever-free)
  • Pertussis (return after 5 days of antibiotics)
  • Unexplained or contagious rash (return with clearance from a healthcare provider)

Your child may attend school if they have:
  • Mild symptoms, such as a runny nose, minor cough, or mild stomach ache
  • No fever overnight and are well enough to participate in school activities

Seek medical attention if your child has:
  • Fever with ear pain, sore throat, rash, or persistent cough
  • Signs of dehydration, severe pain, trouble breathing, or concerning rash/eye symptoms

Even missing a few days each month can affect learning. If you haven’t already submitted permission for your child to receive Tylenol or Ibuprofen, please do so. Without this permission, we are unable to provide these medications to help your child feel better and make it through the school day.

For questions about symptoms or medication forms, contact Nurse Williams at williams@dy-regional.k12.ma.us

Thank you for helping keep our school community healthy!
